You can blur or replace your video background with a virtual background for calls and meetings on StarLeaf for desktop.

Blur your background

You can blur your video background from either the Account tab, or while in an ongoing call or meeting:

Account tab

To blur your background while not in a call or meeting:

  1. Go to the Account tab.

  2. Click Audio and video settings.
  3. Go to the Background tab.

  4. Select Blurred. Your background is now blurred:

If you want to keep this background for future calls and meetings, tick Always use this background. You can remove this background setting at any time by following the same steps as above and selecting Off.

Ongoing call

To blur your background while in an ongoing call or meeting:

  1. Hover your cursor over the call window to reveal the top toolbar.

  2. Select AV settings (this may be under the More menu).
  3. Go to the Background tab.

  4. Select Blurred. Your background is now blurred:

If you want to keep this background for future calls and meetings, tick Always use this background. You can remove this background setting at any time by following the same steps as above and selecting Off.

Replace your background

You can replace your video background with a virtual background, from the Account tab or while in an ongoing call or meeting:

Selected backgrounds must be a JPG or JPEG image, with a minimum resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

Account tab

To replace your background with a custom image while not in a call or meeting:

  1. Go to the Account tab.

  2. Click Audio and video settings.

  3. Go to the Background tab, then click Add image:

  4. Choose a JPG or JPEG image from your device, by double clicking it.

    Your custom background appears:

    Selected backgrounds will appear to be flipped horizontally in the self-view only. Others will see your background as normal.

If you want to keep this background for future calls and meetings, tick Always use this background. You can remove this background setting at any time by following the same steps as above and selecting Off.

Ongoing call

To replace your background with a custom image while in an ongoing call or meeting:

  1. Hover your cursor over the call window to reveal the top toolbar.

  3. Go to the Background tab, then click Add image:

  4. Choose a JPG or JPEG image from your device, by double clicking it.

Background image and system requirements

Image requirements

Custom backgrounds must be images that are:

  • In a JPG or JPEG format
  • At least 1280 x 720 pixels in size

Windows

Laptops and PCs must have the following minimum requirements:

  • Operating system: Windows 7 SP1 or later, 64-bit
  • For the best experience, StarLeaf recommends using Windows 10 version 1909 or later.

  • GPU:
    • Intel HD Graphics: Generation 9 or later
    • NVidia: any card that supports Direct3D Feature Level 12.0 (StarLeaf app version 4.9 or higher required).
    • AMD: any card that supports Direct3D Feature Level 12.0 (StarLeaf app version 4.9 or higher required).

Blurred and custom backgrounds require the latest GPU drivers to run. Make sure you have fully updated your graphics drivers before using a blurred or custom background.

macOS

Devices must be running macOS 10.14 or later.
