There are certain things you can do to make sure that you have the best video conferencing experience.

In this topic:

Internet connection

The speed of your internet connection is important for having high quality video calls.

For the highest quality video calls, connect your laptop directly to your router or network port using an Ethernet cable:

If a wired connection is not possible, set up your workstation as close to a WiFi router as possible.

4G connections are possible on mobile devices, but speeds and quality may vary depending on your provider. Connect to WiFi for a more stable connection.

Speed test

You can check your internet speed before entering a call or meeting, using StarLeaf on any device:

  1. Go to the Account tab.
  2. Select Speed test and run it.

  3. StarLeaf tells you whether HD video is possible with your internet connection.

Lighting

Lighting can be an important factor for people being able to see you during a call or meeting. Sit with a light source either in front of, or directly above you.

Do not sit with a window or light source behind you, as this makes your video dark for other participants:

External equipment

Many laptops have integrated cameras and microphones, but you may get better audio and voice output if you use an external headset.

External headsets not only provide privacy to your calls, but they also reduce the chance of echo. For more information on echo, go to Solving echo.

To set external devices up:

  1. Go to the Account tab.

  2. Click on Audio and video settings.
  3. Use the dropdowns to select your external devices.

You can use the microphone slider to raise or lower the volume of your voice for other people.

Virtual and blurred backgrounds

For some of your meetings (such as those that happen when you are working from home) you may want to obscure your background by either blurring it or replacing the background with something virtual.

StarLeaf does not yet provide these features but you can change your background with tools such as:

There is no relationship between StarLeaf and Snap Camera or Chromacam and users should verify that the privacy assurances of Snap Camera and Chromacam are sufficient to satisfy local legal requirements.
