Sending messages and sharing files to other organizations is now possible with StarLeaf for desktop and mobile.

This feature is in beta so it is subject to change and might be turned on or off depending on its stability. StarLeaf continuously strives to improve its products and service so please send any feedback you might have to your StarLeaf representative.

Messaging between organizations is currently only possible between individuals, not group chats.

Messaging between organizations is currently only available to channel partners, Basic users, and paid organizations who have opted into the beta program.

Prerequisites

To participate in the beta version of messaging between organizations, your organization must have:

  • StarLeaf Portal version 6.8 or higher
  • StarLeaf app versions 4.8 or higher

How to send a message

If your organization has been upgraded to the Portal 6.9 and apps 4.9, you can use the New chat button on the Today or Chat tab to start messaging users from different organizations.

Enter the email address of the person you want to start a chat with and select Start communicating.

If the user is not yet on StarLeaf, you will have the option to invite them.

If your organization is on a version lower than Portal 6.9 and apps 4.9, you will not yet have the New chat button.

In this case, to send a message to someone from another StarLeaf organization:

  1. Type their email address into the Search and dial bar.

  2. Select the contact. A chat window appears:

  3. Send a message as you normally would. The chat window appears for the recipient.

For more information on sending a message, see here.

Known limitations

If you are using messaging between organizations on Portal version 6.8, there are some known issues which are fixed in 6.9. These are:

1 If you enter a person’s email in the Search or dial bar and select Start communicating, but this person is not a StarLeaf user, they will still be added to your chat list but without messaging enabled. If this person signs up to StarLeaf at a later time and you select the existing chat, the chat is still not enabled for messaging.

As a workaround, enter the full email address in the Search or dial bar again and select Start Communicating. This will prompt the creation of a new chat with messaging enabled.

2 If you want to chat with someone external who you have called in the past, you still must enter the full email address in the Search or dial bar, and select the Start communicating option. Do not go to your previous activity with that user as you cannot start a message from here.
3 If you want to call someone external who you have called in the past, you must enter their email address manually in the Search or dial bar, and select the Start communicating option. Do not go to your previous call history with that user as you cannot start a call from here.
4 On StarLeaf for Windows, you cannot initiate a chat with someone external by using the New chat control (when you click the + icon, and select New chat).
5 Deleted users from your own organization are shown as external StarLeaf users in your chat.
6 If a user is deleted, and a new user is created with the same email address, it is not possible to start a chat with them.
